I prefer Steiger in 1) supporting roles 2) using his own accent 3) with a strong director who can supply the taste and the editing that Steiger lacks on his own. In other words, he's excellent in ON THE WATERFRONT, where Kazan keeps him in check, and ludicrous in THE BIG KNIFE, where Aldrich doesn't. In an early scene from RUN OF THE ARROW there's a long speech where Steiger flip-flops between a bad Southern accent and a bad Irish accent.

I remember this movie from back in the day. I have a soft spot for 1970s genre films with the topical storyline as the backdrop for the action, so I am going to give it a try. And, who can resist Lee Remick even in a small role?

This post has everything, starting with the great "SCTV"! Wonderful!

Unfortunately, "Hennessy"'s plot is one that, in the world of TV programming, was/is instant death if you're looking for an audience -- anything to do with the IRA. Has an IRA movie ever worked in a commercial sense? Nobody in America understands the issue or the accents!

(Also, Steiger, in that last photo, looks a whole lot like the comedian Louis C.K., currently the star of his own amazing series on FX! It was a shame that Steiger's W.C. Fields movie wasn't more successful -- it's actually very watchable and is worth a look, also for a really nice Valerie Perrine performance.)

And may the Lord blow you up real good!
