I thought this doc was OK, but I was sorely disappointed in the same things that you were. Overall the work seemed a bit incomplete to me and didn't really delve into a lot of depth about the man himself. Otherwise it was fine, but really I think a more incisive director might have made a lot more of its subject.

Medusa - I think you'll really enjoy it. Shulman was an amazing photographer and his pictures really encapsulate the eras.

Suszidoll - If I had seen it last year the movie would been one of my favorites from 2009 as well. I think when it ended I just wanted to know more about his personal life and how that may have effected or not effected his work or maybe I just wanted to hear Shulman talk more instead of all the other talking heads? Overall though I think it's a good film and I'm really glad that it was made. The bits with Dante Spinotti were very interesting!

This film made my top ten list for 2009; I am glad you spotlighted it as a DVD release. I didn't mind that the director didn't delve into Shulman's personal life, because I think the verite approach to following Shulman around as he speaks his mind reveals enough of his ideas and personality to see how the man and his art connect. My favorite part was cinematographer Dante Spinotti's efforts to duplicate the famous photo on film.

Can't wait to get on Netflix and watch this! I grew up in L.A. of the 1950s and 1960s and of course have a great fondness for the era.

Beautiful photos used here, too! Wonderful post!
