It seemed to me at the time - i saw it when it first came out, and not since - that perhaps the studio was hoping for a sequel or two...

(Can't recall why i thought that, exactly - the unresolved issue of Boyd's character, maybe - but i recall that i did think so.)

Good points, Chris. HANNIE CAULDER does seem like it was trying to appeal to a wide audience and got tripped up in the process. I think the film would have been much better if it nixed all attempts at humor. You can't make creepy rapists funny. Thankfully Welch & Culp seemed determined to keep it serious and it's their performances as well as Christopher Lee's that I like to remember. And the direction at times is just stunning. It's a beautiful looking movie but it's too bad that the sound on the Olive Films DVD is flawed.

One last thought: "Hannie Caulder" seems to be an unlikely hybrid of three different types of westerns which were popular at the time, as it has the arch tone of a 'spaghetti western' (like Leone's "Dollars" trilogy), the warmth of a classic western (like "True Grit" which won John Wayne a best actor Oscar in 1969), and the blood-letting of a Peckinpah western ("The Wild Bunch"). That's an uneasy amalgam, to say the least, but that same diversity is what yields so much interest in "Hannie Caulder."

Just got this film on DVD in the US. Sadly, Olive Films botched the ending: the closing music is out of sync with Bobby Hanna's singing; I watched the European version online, and that wasn't the case. It's a defect with the region 1 DVD in the original source material. Too bad Olive Films didn't catch this mistake.

I agree about the general assessment of the film. It has many great parts, and great potential, but it is flawed. My favorite scene has the master flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia in an unbilled cameo, playing the acoustic guitar, while Hannie (Raquel Welch) and Thomas (Robert Culp) walk along the seaside as the sun sets. Hannie suddenly takes Thomas's hand into her own, a gesture with much meaning, considering her husband had been murdered, and she had been raped by the three men who killed him. It is beautifully understated, and shows that she is beginning to rise above her pain and truly appreciates Thomas for being a gentleman and teaching her how to shoot a pistol. Ken Thorne's soaring violin strings orchestration behind de Lucia's guitar work in that scene is nothing short of majestic, and coupled with the touching visuals (and gorgeous Spanish coast doubling for the Gulf of Mexico) it lingers in the memory long afterwards. Christopher Lee was also superb in his atypically sympathetic role. A four star moment in a two-and-a-half to three-star movie.

In life I often find that what goes around comes around, but when it doesn't sometimes it's necessary to 'educate' the offending party with a short sharp shock!

But enough about reality, fantasy is far more fun, and 'Hannie Caulder' is another one of those 70s westerns that never gets remembered as much as it should be. While it may be somewhat below the par of something like 'High Noon' or 'Once Upon A Time In The West', it still has a lot to offer and makes for an entertaining 90 minutes plus, not so much because of the story, a revenge re-tread, but because of the performances of all the cast, a wish list in the 2000s that would remain just that.

This is a fine piece of writing about an underrated film. No-one mentioned the series of superb westerns Burt Kennedy wrote for director Budd Boetticher in the late '50s and early '60s. Despite his wonderful Support Your Local Sheriff (1969) and Support Your Local Gunfighter (1971) he didn't quite have the success as a director that he had as a screenwriter. Thanks for reminding me of this film. I'll watch it again.
