Pacing was the least of it! Agreed, “Sátántangó” is absolutely a beautiful film. As is “2001.” By the way, your film series sounds superb. Not getting the film is that distributor’s loss. Keep us updated on what you do or don’t get booked as it’s fascinating reading. Cheers.

Thanks for the feedback. It’s fascinating to me that at the fest you screened this at there were walkouts galore, but I’m pretty sure that would not be the case at my film series. We only had two walkouts for our eight-hour screening of “Sátántangó” (which only had one long intermission for a dinner break). As previous threads on the topic of “2001: A Space Odyssey” make clear, one man’s “poor pacing” is another man’s Manna From Heaven. Personally, I think that too many modern movies go overboard trying to emulate speed with an array of fast cuts that leave the eye scant time to soak in the visual information that might otherwise be gleaned within the frame. So for me films that have a relaxed pace serve as a refreshing antidote to what is currently the market norm. But, hey! Different strokes for different folks…

Very nice essay, but, in my humble opinion, I was bored to tears by the film. It had plenty of interesting ideas, but was severely hampered by substandard execution, poor pacing, dull characters. I’m not at all surprised that this didn’t go over well with the public as there were walkouts galore at the international fest I caught this at. Weird that you can’t get this booked.
