Her hair will always be a source of debate among fans. Here is an original color picture from about '41 or '42 (sorry about the long link)

very dark brown, not red.
However when she was a blond in the '30s, it was definitely a more strawberry blond. Here's a color pic from Follow the Fleet:

Ginger Rogers has become my favorite Golden Age actress in recent years--such a great comedienne. I am looking forward to LUCKY PARTNERS, which I have never seen, and other Rogers' films on TCM.

BTW,I am watching THE MAJOR AND THE MINOR on TCM as I write this, and she has dark hair in this movie, too.

I read Ginger Roger's autobiography, and I remember she wrote that her natural hair color was a light brown, but when she got to Hollywood, someone convinced her mother to have Ginger dye her hair blonde. I'm guessing that the Jean Harlowe,"platinum blonde" look was the rage then. Ginger wrote that she let her hair go natural for Kitty Foyle.

Good post. I recently watched a comedy over Christmas break that starred Ronald Coleman, Jean Arthur, and Cary Grant, The Talk of the Town. It was a well-done comedy, Colman and Arthur's characters created sparks, Arthur and Grant's characters created sparks, and I don't know how her character could have ever chosen between Colman or Grant-impossible!

I also rewatched Rebecca with my 15 year old daughter recently, and I did find it hard to believe that Maximillian(Olivier's character) would have been attracted to such a mouse as Joan Fontaine's. Still a great picture, but I have a teensy doubt about the chemistry there.

Thanks for the correction Mary. Here is what Ginger said about it in her autobiography: "By the time we started Kitty Foyle, my very dark hair had washed out to a tone I felt would be acceptable....I concluded that Kitty couldn't possibly be a blonde. She was the daughter of a proud Irishman, and had to look and act like one. Dark hair, blue eyes, a quick wit, and a stinging tongue..."

Marvelous review -- this description explained PERFECTLY what I've thought of their teaming for years: "But there is also that gray area in between where it both sparks and fizzles out simultaneously, allowing you to see the potential and the unmet expectations of a promising pairing." Absolutely perfect.

As a die-hard Ronald Colman fan, I watch this more often than most people would, but I agree it's a pleasant, albeit not wonderful, movie :)
