wanted to like it…but instead found it tedious. It’s also
not really a holiday movie at all. Deneuve is photographed
rather un-flatteringly and the topic of bone marrow donation
with detailed hospital procedures shown was hardly entertaining.
It was like watching a film diva you have admired getting
chemotherapy! Not a performance I care to remember at all….

And you’re right. I think it would have been far more successful here had the marketing not made it out to be a typical Xmas Family Reunion picture. This film is actually the anti- version of that.

The French ancestry in me is urging me to seek this film out, and to reinforce my knowledge of the language, what I can figure out from highschool french classes. :)

On a side note, I read that actress Jennifer Jones just passed away. Any info if TCM will make some programming changes and show several of her movies?

At its conclusion, I wondered why I was so into the film. And you hit it on the head, it’s Robert Altmanesque. The characters draw you into the tale and there are enough fine directorial touches to hold your interest. Then like any good bon-bon, you quickly forget the experience. Of the films mentioned, DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY is essential viewing and an underrated achievement, beautifully done.
