The last scenes with Richard Farnsworth in Anne of Green Gables and the final scene of The Straight Story always bring me to tears, regardless of how well I brace myself. He’s just so good at getting you to fall in love with his characters.

I loved Richard Farnsworth, and your article was so vivid with explanation and highlights of his career.

I try and stick with Suzie’s articles, but ever once in awhile another pops up here and simply cannot resist
& this is 1 of those
*Robert Duvall was/is such a fan of Farnsworth’s that the year he won his only *OSCAR 1983′s “Tender Mercies” He was very outspoken in saying he thought the not nommed that yr Farnsworth really deserved the statue for “The Grey Fox”

& of all people David Lynch-(“B. Velvet” “Lost Highway” “Twin Peaks” “Mulholland Dr. & others, helmed that wonderful “Straight-Story”)

This was likely touched on, but he shot and killed himself in 2000 at age 80 due to suffering from CANCER-(as did Brian Keith only a couple yrs prior)

I’ve been a fan of The Grey Fox for three decades. Ideally, it would be great to see this movie on DVD soon. The movie, and Farnsworth’s gently larcenous characterization deserves to be seen again. I’ve yet to see The Straight Story (probably because I’m not a Lynch fan), but after reading about it here, I suspect that it will be added to many Netflix queues in the future, including mine.

Thanks for this lovely piece on Richard Farnsworth, a truly exceptional actor of quiet talent. We don’t hear enough about the stuntmen, who with few exceptions, seemed rather disposable to the studios.

Years after it came out I finally caught up with “The Straight Story” on one of the pay movie channels one morning…absolutely loved it and your post makes me want to see it again very soon. (As a fairly recent convert to ride-on lawnmowers myself, it also resonates on that level.)

Good on Ya m’am! Richard rode off into the Sunrise on a John Deere lawn mower as befits this mechanical milieu. Next best thing to a Sunset and a Horse! Thank you for the fine writing and the visual treats. Kudos to David Lynch too, a sweet film. Happy Holidays. w. t.

I miss really good character actors like Farnsworth–and he was very handsome even in his senior years. What a great idea for a Christmas movie, particularly for those of us lacking in Christmas spirit.
