In 1943 I was 7 years old, and encountered a couple of the enchanting Treasure Books in a school library. I remember little doors with treasures behind them, pop-ups, mechanicals, puzzles, hidden miniature toys, even lollipops! Such wonders that I could never forget the name of that creator, and now I learn so much about him. Those books were completely magical. I wish someone were still making them.
I suppose computer adventure games have replaced them, but you can't touch anything The Sarg books were an Experience. Unforgettable.

Thanks for this article.

As others have said previously, I was not aware of this artist's work before reading this splendid account of Tony Sarg's contributions to early animation and an American tradition at the holidays. He is a delightful discovery, and you really should write a book on his career, Moira!

Great information on an artist who lived large in many ways. Thanks for reminding us why we've loved the parade all these years. I especially liked the visual of the balloons escaping across the bay at the end of the parade. Thanksgiving wouldn't be the same without the imagination of Tony Sarg. I'd love to see the dinosaur come back.
