I found this movie in my local library years ago. I was quite shocked just how mature it was. Sherlock Holmes films are usually
milder than this.

A STUDY IN TERROR is currently available as a Import DVD if you have an all region player but Sony apparently plans to release it domestically in the near future since it is showing up on Amazon with a retail price already.

Fusing the lowbrow with the highbrow was pretty much the defining characteristic of British horror films from this period, and I think it's why I still love them more than just about anything. The best ones are kind of perfect. And A Study in Terror is definitely one of the best.

John Neville was offered the part of Holmes in the late 60s BBC series (replacing Douglas Wilmer), but he passed and it went to Peter Cushing instead. Although I would have liked to see Neville take another shot at it, I have no complaints with the final choice. Neville did go on to play the Holmesian Dr. Thorndyke in the first episode of The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes. If you liked his performance in A Study in Terror, it's worth checking out. If anything, Thorndyke is even more robotic, conceited, and condescending than Holmes, but Neville still gives him a slightly mischievous quality and sly sense of humor.

I've never seen MURDER BY DECREE but the print TCM is showing of A STUDY IN TERROR looks great with the garish Eastmancolor restored to its vivid hues of red, blue, pink, purple and green.

Managed to see Study in Terror years ago on a long out-of-print VHS copy, not long before meeting Neville, who was returning to Halifax for a special anniversary celebration at Neptune Theatre, where he had been a prominent artistic director for a number of years. I had the chance to tell him how much I enjoyed his performance (although Jeremy Brett remains my definitive Holmes) and he mentioned that he regretted that the film wasn't better known. He appreciated the fact I'd seen it though, and seemed to be fond of the chance to play the famous detective.

Neville had a successful theatre career before resurfacing in Baron Munchausen, but it's a shame he didn't get more film work, he's a dynamic and engaging presence (wonderful on the stage as well).

Nicholas Meyer, who wrote the Holmes pastiche The Seven Per Cent Solution also wrote The West-End Horror, which combines Holmes and a Ripper-like killer, and there's another Sherlock Holmes vs. the Ripper novel called The Last Sherlock Holmes Story by Michael Dibden. And of course there are also novels that pit Holmes against Dracula, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and, if you can believe it, War of the Worlds.

I've enjoyed Murder By Decree, but every broadcast of it I've seen has been in flat looking, washed out TV prints. There's a new-ish DVD of it from Sony, hopefully it's an improvement.

Hey, I've been on the Rumbelow tour, too; as a boy, I had his boo, which made meeting the man himself quite an honor. It really is pretty thrilling walking through those crooked-y side streets of Whitechapel, where life is cheap and anything can happen. The second/last time I took the tour, not with Donald, we ended our tour at the Ten Bells pub.

I think sir doyle published his book in 1887, not 1987, and TCM is showing A Study In Terror on December 25th at 4 am. Otherwise, I enjoyed hearing about this movie so much, that I will be DVRing it so that I will not miss any of the aforementioned actors. Thank you.
