Finally watched this one after having it on the DVR for months, and was impressed. What struck me were the scenes where Helen Mack's character, Mickey, wanted to avoid riding on that train at all costs -- and when you saw the men leering down at the women about to join them, you got the idea something pretty bad had happened to her on a previous train ride. Nothing was said, but it came across loud and clear.

I DVR'ed this film and have just finished watching it. I am so glad I did! It was a very entertaining 61 minutes. The performances were not entirely bad either.

Like the blog post I too did notice that there was a lack of diversity. Initially I was taken aback because many films during this time did have a diversity (more or less) presented as background scenery. But also like the article said it may have something to do with how B-movie productions operated during this era. That would be an interesting subject to research - history and background of B-movies.

I also wish more films would take a cue from a B-movie like this and focus the narrative on an appropriate timeframe as opposed to dragging out the running time of the movie.

[...] Girls of the Road was one of three films Ann made for Columbia in 1939/40 (Blind Alley and Cafe Hostess were the others). It’s only about an hour long, but packs in a lot, and who can resist lady tramps? Still not sold? Check out this endorsement on TCM’s Movie Morlocks. [...]

Wow! It sounds wonderful! I'm definitely going to watch this one. Great cast and I always love Ann Doran -- just watched an older AD yesterday in "It! The Terror from Beyond Space". I love your comment about the actors in that one scene ceasing to seem like actors but like real people.

Thanks for putting the spotlight on this fascinating film! Of course, my favorite hobos on film are always The Three Stooges in their early shorts, who so often were, if not technically hobos, at least as down as out as they come. Seems like Columbia had a knack for that kind of thing.

I remember hearing about this film but I have never seen it. The film stills remind me of Depression-era photography like Lange and Evans. I will have to make sure I catch this one.

Had Ann Dvorak and Helen Mack worked together before? If so, the ads should have trumpeted "Dvorak and Mack are Back!" Just sayin'.
