Also, the above cited book has a superb 1933/33 photo of *"The Duke"-(TRIVIA: Aldo Ray-(l926-l99l) was very outspoken & not a fan of his, so when they made the awful (*-out of 4) '68 "Green Berets' he refused to refer to him as "The Duke!")
Anyway, the picture is very rare of him, I think his first wife & *Tracy-(in sunglasses & obviously not there to get a suntan, due to being fully-dressed & at that early time *Spence like *Jimmy Cagney-(l899-l986) had very red-hair, something many may not know due to B & W. However, *Wayne is in a bathing suit as is the lady in the photo. All 3 sitting side by side at what may have been "Hollywood Athletic Club' or another I forget right now)

It's in simulated "Cowhide" & maybe fans can locate-it? It was around that period I was just really discovering movies as a kid of only 14. Would have to dig for-it right now 4 the author, etc However, if any want more info drop me a line. These 1930's flix he churned-out were nicknamed "0aters' due to the cheapness of 'em. But, as he said he had a family to support

Moira, another fine blog. Ironically although I'm a John Wayne fan I have never seen the movie "Three Faces West". However, after reading your article I will make it a point to tape it on October 1st. Thanks once again.

I saw this movie some months ago and wondered why so little was ever mentioned about it. John Wayne and Sigrid Gurie's tentative relationship and their conflicted loyalties does resemble that of the couple in THE QUIET MAN. Now I must go back and see this again to check out the influence that these scenes may have exerted on John Ford.

Btw, you don't mention Spencer Charters, the cantankerous veterinarian who is won over when Chas Coburn treats him like a colleague. He is a sort of blend of Walter Brennan and Barry Fitzgerald, with a bit of Gabby Hayes thrown in.

I am another who is very interested in movies that depict the Depression, (however unrealistically or affected by the "isms" of their day). This is a good piece, which I read just after your fascinating account of Hallelujah, I'm a Bum.

What a fantastic review, layered with your always astute observations. I've not seen this movie, and I missed my chance this week, but I'll keep on the lookout for it. (As it is, the poor old recorder's been doing double duty with TCM's Summer Under the Stars month.)

"Only in Hollywood would such a mixture of political and aesthetic tastes collaborate in one movie–at least for a time. One of the myths about our “endless frontier” and its endless ability to shape our evolving national character was revived here, suggesting it still had spiritual strength, while others, such as long held notions of America’s being separate from the rest of the world, were amended, up to a point."

This in particular interests me, the contemplative, socially-conscious Depression-era film that may bite off more than it can chew, but makes a noble attempt at "painting" a picture more than just "filming" one.

Moriafinnie:

You and I must think alike. I watched this movie last night on TCM. What an interesting little film. I knew nothing about it but decided to watch because I was not familiar with the director. I really liked the movie, though I could not stay awake for the end. I thought about blogging about it but since I didn't see the end, I discarded the idea. Thanks for doing it instead and giving it the A+ Moirafinnie treatment.
