One of my husband's faves. We need to get a hold of it and have the teens at our house view it. My son's been wanting to have his friends over for a movie night, and these kids know who Dennis Quaid and Daniel Stern are, maybe this should be the pic we choose? Thanks for a fun post. Jackie Earle Haley was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the film Little Children.

Seen the movie a number of times. A big fave. Favorite time watching it: In a common area of my dorm at Indiana State University(Terre Haute). When Dennis Quaid's character talks about being bored and wanting to go the Terre Haute, everybody present let out a huge howl of laughter because we knew better.

I had the opportunity to interview Paul Dooley a few years ago and he said people often wonder why he doesn't play parts like the one in Breaking Away all the time. The gist of his answer was simple, he'd be glad to, but he's never gotten a script of the quality that Steve Tesich wrote for Breaking Away since then.
I love this movie.

Thanks for highlighting this great movie! Yes, as you note, this theme (underdog makes good) is the basis for just about every comedy ever made, from Chaplin to Steve Martin, from Hugh Grant to Jim Carrey. But this film has a heart that, as you point out, holds up; it engages me every single time I watch it. And Barbara Barrie and Paul Dooley are so much fun as dad and mom. THIS IS A FIVE STAR FILM - if you haven't seen it in a while, go and rent it.
