NYAFF will be showing his 2008 film which is a remake of The X From Outer Space. It's probably the film I'm most excited to catch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m95qjUNdsCE

These look really good to me! I had seen the title "The Calamari Wrestler" but never stopped to investigate -- I'll now track it down and watch. I love giant squids, and I love wrestling! The "Rug Cop" also looks amazing, plus the disaster-movie premise of "The World Sinks..." is so tantalizing!

If this is silly, I don't want to get serious! Great post, Jeff!

Jeff:

I know what you mean about the unusual nature of Japanese pop culture. At Facets, we have released many contemporary Japanese films on our label, and some of them are kind of cool, others just plain odd, and some just ridiculously bad. One I liked was MIKE YOKOHAMA, which was apparently a failed pilot for Japanese tv about a film-noir-style private detective. The detective seemed more interested in appropriating all of the pop-culture codes of the archetypal character than solving the case. We are releasing several of the Kobayashi films, including MAN WALKING ON SNOW and BOOTLEG FILM, the latter something of an hommage to French New Wave gangster films.

I will bet that I enjoyed reading your post about The Calamari Wrestler more than actually seeing the movie.
