Brilliant article, Jeff. Always wanted to know about many of these titles, and now I'm edumacated. I gotta see PERRI, JULIE, TEENAGE REBEL, THE INVISIBLE MAN RETURNS and I've always wanted to catch JUST IMAGINE ever since I saw photos of its weirdness in an ancient sci-fi book I used to have. Anyway, I'm keeping my eye out for a lot of these titles now, thanks to an excellent article! Now, I gotta go read part 1!

John's right, the sets for "Just Imagine" were used in Flash Gordon serials, but I don't know that the film was ever shown on TCM. You guys would know more than I would about that. All I know is that the few people I know who have a copy recorded it off that unnamed other movie channel several years ago.

I really, really want to see "The Invisible Man Returns". It looks terrific.

Your illustration in JUST IMAGINE was used in the Flash Gordon Serials as any serial fan knows. It has been shown on TCM and I found it cute, maureen o sullivan must have been all of 18 at the time.

Well, I can't find any equivalents from this year's Oscar race to match anything here. However, in these enlightened times, isn't it weird to have Robert Downey Jr. running in the Best Supporting Actor category playing a black man? Isn't that like Linda Hunt running in the Best Supporting Actress Category for playing a dwarf man in The Year of Living Dangerously?

Amazing list! TCM should probably dedicate an evening to "Oscar's Oddities"--I'm sure that there's a lot of us who'd be fascinated to see some of these obscure (but apparently well-regarded at one time) flicks! One movie that I've been curious about for years is "Half a House," which garnered a nomination for the 1976 "Best Song" Oscar. I remember watching the the 1976 Oscar ceremony on TV--and thinking, "HUH?" when "A World That Never Was" from "Half a House" was announced as a nominee! (Incidentally, the still-great "Car Wash" theme song was not nominated for "Best Song" in 1976--while this obscurity did get a nod. A lot of the 1970s music/song nominees are just plain odd!) Thanks for the great articles on oddities!

Just amazing examples of things that snuck through Oscar's gated community to liven up the joint! I especially love PRC's nominations!

Nowadays even an underdog film -- I guess "Slumdog Millionaire" fits the description -- becomes so over-hyped that it *feels* mainstream, at least. I'd say Melissa Leo's nom as Best Actress might be the most unlikely and refreshing this year, and she's wonderful!
