Did you hear the one about the New Year’s Blizzard?
Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen couldn’t be more excited about the possibility of snow as they harmonize in 1954’s White Christmas. As a particularly loyal Danny Kaye fan I like the movie, but honestly, it’s a pretty weak Irving Berlin outing and has a particularly synthetic feel about it, but it’s clearly considered one of those holiday standards and spawned a stage version which even made it to Broadway this year. (This year it ran on the Lifetime TV network in a terribly cut-up version to fit into two hours, which is just inexcusable these days. Have some respect, already!)
And Bing Crosby and Bob Hope had a great time crossing the snow-covered Alaskan landscape in the hilarious Road to Utopia, one of the best of the Road pictures. (I need to do an intensive article on those movies soon. They’re priceless!) Unfortunately, I can’t feel quite the same about Alaska since that Wasilla woman descended upon us all last year! I love the lighter side of snow, the hijinks and all, but when you’re crossing your fingers that your power isn’t going to go out, it’s a tad nerve-wracking. (When our power goes out, we lose our water, too, which isn’t fun at all!). But in any case, it’s 2009, and we’ve got a whole year ahead of us for classic movies and for newer movies — I’ve watched Brad Pitt’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Milk so far this past week or so – and there are always so many new discoveries to be made, many of them thanks to the other Morlocks and our readers who are so good at pointing the way to amazing movie choices. I’m a little snow-addled right now so this is a short post, but here’s to 2009 and many movies for all of us! 3 Responses Did you hear the one about the New Year’s Blizzard?
I second an indepth look at the “Road” movies. I first saw one on a Saturday afternoon when I was 12 and I loved it! The humor and obvious camaraderie of Crosby and Hope are delightful. As a side comment, the govenor of Illinois is a real piece of work when compared to the governor of Alaska! Makes me think TCM should do a night of movies about corrupt politicos who get their comeuppances. I’m glad I left New England ten years ago for beautiful (almost) snowless Arizona! I never cared much for WHITE CHRISTMAS, based around a single song, when HOLIDAY INN, the source of that song, is still around to see. (Though I can’t say I’m especially fond of the latter either. Oh, well.) Leave a Reply |

I love the “Road” movies! “Utopia” is probably my favorite (with “Morocco” being a very close 2nd). Would love to read an in depth article on their brilliance.
