Mr. S.

I hope that you get the part. Break a leg, as they say in show business, and thanks for the kind comment. I appreciate it.

Your fine piece came at a timely moment, since I came across a dvd of Goya's Ghosts (2006) at the library last month. I was attracted by the artist, whose powerfully felt paintings and etchings never cease to enthrall me, and was intrigued to find the movie as a kind of meditation on the duality of the Napoleonic period--when conquests occurred in the name of "freedom"--and ultimately changed Europe for better and worse. The parallels to our own time, the acting and "look" of the movie helped to make it one of the best films I'd seen all year.

The only Czech films by Milos Forman that I had seen previously were Loves of a Blonde and Firemen's Ball, but you and this recent movie make me want to see more. Thanks for drawing attention to Forman and particularly Goya's Ghost.

I love the last comment about "the tyranny of the box office" in comparison to Communism!

fascinating suzidoll. We read so much about the HUngarians in Hollywood that one forgets the impact the czechs and Forman in particular has had. Am I wrong, but didnt he also do the film version of "hair"? it is interesting to write about an insider from an outsider's point of view and vice versa which is what you did. It is also amazing to have seen those films, "loves of a blonde, etc in the sixties and seventies and to see them now and see how they resonate even more so in the 21st century. I agree with you about his ability to critiicize the government while telling an otherwise innocent story. very interesting.... is there anything you cant do?
