Three of your choices - Man Who Came to Dinner, White Christmas and Desk Set - are among my all-time favorite movies. It is interesting that they were directed by Hollywood pros, not arteurs. Also two of the three - White Xmas and Desk Set - generally receive put-downs when discussed in books but are usually audience favorites.

Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye have a great chemistry together that makes the film work. I'm glad Paramount didn't decide to milk it like it milked the Hope-Crosby chemistry. One of the blessings of the Golden Age of Films is that there was no White Christmas Part Two or Casablanca Part Two in those days.
Incidentally, all four of the leads have great chemistry together.

I got my brother Mike hooked on White Christmas and Man Who Came to Dinner. I've said to him on occasion, "Whiteside, I've come to spend Christmas with you," one of the great Durante's lines. The first time I showed the movie to him he moaned when Durante showed up. He had been enjoying the movie immensely until then. But you're right. Durante is great in the film. And Mike thought so too.

I honestly don't know why Desk Set takes such a beating from reviewers. There are much worse, unwatchable movies the duo made, like Sea of Grass or Keeper of the Flame. You have a good time watching the movie and what more can you ask than that?

where do I begin? I loved The Man Who Came To Dinner..... and I loved the inclusion of YOung at Heart. I remember the first time I saw it I thought it was going to be a comedy and you are right, when they get to the song "One more for the road" you are ready to slit your wrists.. i loved your list. I saw The Miracle of 34th Street today. The one from 1955 without Natalie Wood. I didnt realize they made one in 1947 and one in 1955. Either way, the Seaton screenplay is pretty clever...even if it is soapy. But i thought you really nailed it with the inclusion of Desk Set and The Ref. It makes me want to see all the movies on your list again. Merry Christmas Suzi DOll.

I really liked your list, and I look forward particularly to seeing THE REF some time.

One more thing about the remake of FOUR DAUGHTERS; if I recall correctly, they not only added the songs but they also lost a daughter; there were only three sisters. Even with Ethel Barrymore in this one, I still liked the older version better.

My current favorite CHRISTMAS CAROL is Patrick Stewart's, though the best version was the audio cassettes we used to have of Stewart reading the original story! That's probably available on CD nowadays.

I find it amazing that we assume that if we have to make a list of something, it has to have some element of "different" in it. A list of you favorites is just that... your favorites. It doesn't have to matter if they are eclectic or not.

I LOVE the Ref! The St. Lucy celebration is a rip!

Thanks for your list, Suzi. I agree that Christmas Carol with George C. Scott is excellent. While I have yet to see the version with Alistair Sims, I also think the one with Mr. Scott captures the scarier aspects of Mr. Dickens ghost story. The teleplay is well done; follows the story very well.

Funny Farm looks humorous, and I haven't seen it. During this break, I'll be sure to rent it.
