Even when he smiles? Note the face in the helmet in the first poster image. That’s why the guy is so good as a demented villain in The Ghost Ship and as the subversive star of the Whistler series. He’s great here. Completely believable as a guy seduced by the call of greatness beyond the usual level of human importance – aka immortality. It’s grim, I tell ya.

It was was forerunner of “Journey to the Center of the Earth” with James Mason and Pat Boone, “At the Earth’s Core” with Doug McClure and the great Peter Cushing and many more. Sci-fi enthusiasts should check it out.
