The early Barbara Stanwyck had that wonderful, undefinable combination of plainness bordering on homeliness and an almost feral sexuality that made vamping unnecessary. Isn't it funny how so many wonderfully diverse and humorous actors of the classic era developed such stern, almost joyless personae in the 60s? Stanwyck, Melvin Douglas, Frederick March and Robert Taylor come immediately to mind. Did they just burn out? Or did they stop caring?
