It starts off as a lighthearted road trip and amusing character study and veers off into tragedy in the final moments, becoming a critique of Roberto’s carefree character. If you’ve only seen Vittorio Gassman in American movies, you need to see his performance here to understand why he was as revered as Marcello Mastroianni in his own country. I also like Risi’s THE TIGER AND THE PUSSYCAT with Gassman and Ann-Margret which is not on the same high level as THE EASY LIFE but lots of fun.
