Wow, an eyewitness account! Thanks for sharing this Stan. I stand understand people booing a really lousy sound system when someone like Dylan is performing. The problem is how to determine how many were booing because of that or because of his choice of song or something else?

I was there, and my reaction was different from most of those I have read. I was a Dylan fan for years at that point, so I could have forgiven almost anything. But leading off with Maggie's Farm, probably the most atonal song in his repertoire, was a major mistake, because all the audience heard was a two-chord monotone (duotone?) compounded by a horrible fuzz due to a hurried or nonexistent sound check. Of course there were boos, and not just from the acoustic folkies in the audience. It was too loud, too fuzzy, and the wrong song to choose to introduce a new concept to the folk-music devotees. To this day, I am convinced that if had started with Like A Rolling Stone, the reaction would have been much different.

What a great post about Dylan. Made me question the
conventional wisdom about the booing and, all in all, you did a great
job in writing and commenting. Great piece.
Thanks.

Another great portrait of Dylan during his early years - especially
that "Cate Blanchatt" period of I'M NOT THERE - is D.A.
Pennebaker's DON'T LOOK BACK. It came out in 1967 but covers
Dylan's tour of England in 1965, the happening year. It's
available in a deluxe DVD edition with a lot of extra footage and music
not previously seen or heard.
