I am watching "Beloved Infidel" (again) and decided to surf the net and read up on F.Scott Fitzgerald and Sheila Graham. Of course this pursuit led me to the historical site of " Garden of Alla".

What wonderful Hollywood history. What I wouldn't give to be able to see it. The movie shows a scene where it appears the "Garden" or a replica it is shown. Alas it is no more. Too bad Hollywood did not try to salvage this great landmark.

Thanks for the great article. I first read The Garden of Allah by Sheilah Graham in 1972. I last read it in 2008. What a fascinating place and era.

Mid 50s, when I was 8 years old, my best friend's parents swam often in the pool at the Garden of Allah. They were good friends with the singer Bobby Darin, who I seem to recall lived in one of the villas.

Great article. Must have been really a magic time when Hollywood was young. What a period of time in history that I would love to revisit in a modern day "time machine". How great it would be to revisit those villas, the pool and the general atmosphere of a time long gone! Thanks for the effort put into this article and the great photos. How said Nazimova went bankrupt and ended up as she did.

What a great article! Well done! I never knew Tallulah Bankhead lived/inhabited there. I wish I could have seen some of those stars. I also wonder how Nazimova reacted to all of those people after her mansion became a hotel.

Moira, The Garden of Allah lives on through your writing. Many years ago, when the bank was Security Pacific (today it is a Washington Mutual), they had a miniature replica of the Garden of Allah on display in their lobby.I have often wondered what happened to it when the bank changed hands.

Hi Moira!Great article on The Garden. As a big Robert Benchley fan, I have always imagined how delightful it must have been to meet that most amiable of gentlemen, especially, let's say, on a stroll around TGoA. Makes you wish somebody would hurry up and invent a time machine, doesn't it? Thanks for the lovely look back!

Moira, needless to say it is an extraordinary piece of Hollywood memorabilia. As I was reading I could feel the decadence of a time and place gone by.The history of the "Garden of Allah" is most interesting, and the ancedotes of the stars was a hoot. One can only imagine what really went on there with the cast of characters mentioned, especially Tallulah. I loved it.
