A good excuse for my 8-year-old’s future therapy

During the month of October, my son and I are watching only scary movies. 'Tis the season. So this weekend I subjected him to "Psycho." For the first 40 minutes, he was rather mystified. "This isn't scary at all," he argued. Well, then Marian gets it. Then Arbogast takes his bloody tumble. Poor little guy. That Herrmann score is what really did it to him. It's so violent and overwhelming, the music. I was impressed with his resolve though. He stuck with it. No nightmares. He's quite a trooper. Up next: perhaps a Hammer horror film, or The Sixth Sense, or Freaks.

Ahhh… to be an8-year old again and seeing all the horror classics for the first time! If you're going to go for a Hammer film next my vote would be "Horror of Dracula".

Here is a FANTASTIC movie for an 8 year old to watch.  It's called "The Lady in White".  This movie came out in 1988, and is rated PG-13.  It's a great film that you will enjoy as much as your son.  It's set in upstate New York in the 1960's, and has some beautiful scenery in it.  It starts out in a fourth grade classroom where 10 year old Frankie is reading a story he wrote to the class.  Some bullies decide to lock him in the cloak room, where he is left overnight.  He sees the ghost of a little girl, and witnesses her murder.  He then sets out to find out who killed the little girl and bring the murderer to justice.  They just re-released it on DVD last year, and you can pick it up on Amazon for around $10.  However, if you can get your hands on a used copy of the out of print Director's Cut DVD, you will not be disappointed.  The Director's cut has some great scenes added to it.  Happy Halloween!!!!!

Ah, Psycho!  I remember when I was in college back in the 70's.  Psycho was on TV late one Saturday night.  The other movie freak in the dorm and I headed to the living room to watch.  We asked the guys already there if it would be allright if we watched the movie; they said sure.  One guy said he had never seen it.  Geoff and I just looked at each other and shared a devilish smile.  Everything was calm through the build-up, but when when the shower scene struck, the innocent lamb was totally freaked out.  And the ending further shattered his grasp on reality.  It was fiendish fun seeing the effect one movie could have on a person.
